Shoreline Change Patterns in Sandy

چکیده

12 13 Coastal changes on sandy shorelines are continuous and occur at diverse spatial and 14 temporal scales. Gaining knowledge on beach change processes increases our capability 15 to manage risks affecting the increasing population living in coastal areas, especially 16 shoreline erosion. Processes and factors involved in mediumand short-term beach 17 changes depend on the morphological and dynamic characteristics of the coast. In this 18 work, the decadal behaviour of 58 sandy beaches along the 150 km long South-Atlantic 19 coast of Spain, between Guadalquivir river mouth and the Strait of Gibraltar, is analysed 20 in order to investigate the relationships between shoreline change patterns and the 21 diverse morphological and dynamic factors controlling beach evolution in the area. For 22 this purpose, georectified aerial photographs spanning the period 1956-2008 were 23 compared in a GIS environment to calculate rates of shoreline change. Short-term 24 evolution of beach profiles was also analysed in selected areas of interest. 25 Manuscript Click here to view linked References

Shoreline Change Estimation from Survey Image Coordinates and Neural Network Approximation

Shoreline erosion problems caused by global warming and sea level rising may result in losing of land areas, so it should be examined regularly to reduce possible negative impacts. Initially in this study, three sets of survey images obtained from the years of 1990, 2001, and 2010, respectively, are digitalized by using graphical software to establish the spatial coordinates of six major beache...

Uncertainties in Sandy Shorelines Evolution under the Bruun Rule Assumption

In the current practice of sandy shoreline change assessments, the local sedimentary budget is evaluated using the sediment balance equation, that is, by summing the contributions of longshore and cross-shore processes. The contribution of future sea-level rise induced by climate change is usually obtained using the Bruun rule, which assumes that the shoreline retreat is equal to the change of ...

Shoreline Change and Pacific Climatic Oscillations in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii

ROONEY, J.J.B., and FLETCHER, C.H. III, 2004. Shoreline change and Pacific climatic oscillations in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii. Journal of Coastal Research, 21(0), 000–000. West Palm Beach (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. Increasing demands on coastal areas require enhanced understanding of coastal erosion hazards. Here we analyze a 5-km segment of the Kihei coastline (Maui, Hawaii) centered on an area of c...

On a reduced-complexity shoreline model combining cross-shore and alongshore processes

We present a new empirical shoreline evolution model integrating longshore and cross-shore processes. It is designed for wave-dominated sandy coasts and includes feedback between shoreline and wave dynamics. It can also take into account non-erodible (e.g. rocks, artificial structures) contours and complex wave propagation patterns through the coupling with the spectral wave model SWAN. While t...

Progress in coupling models of human and coastal landscape change

4 Humans are increasingly altering the Earth’s surface, and affecting processes that shape and 5 reshape landscapes. In many cases, humans are reacting to landscape-change processes that 6 represent natural hazards. Thus, the landscape is reacting to humans who are reacting to the 7 landscape. When the timescales for landscape change are comparable to those of human 8 dynamics, human and ‘natur...
